This case study chronicles my efforts as a Design Manager over the past three years in fostering a thriving design team culture. The journey encompassed significant growth – expanding the team from 12 members to a robust 56-person team – followed by a period of adaptation as the company navigated downsizing, resulting in a smaller team of 17 members. Through it all, a focus on building a strong team culture remained central to success.
When I assumed the Design Manager role, the team comprised 12 talented individuals, but a sense of community and shared vision was lacking. The primary challenge was to cultivate a collaborative and supportive environment that fostered creativity and innovation.
I implemented several initiatives to build a strong foundation for growth:
Team-Building Activities: We initiated regular team-building activities, both work-related (design sprints) and social (team outings). These activities encouraged collaboration, communication, and fostered a sense of camaraderie.
Knowledge Sharing Sessions: We launched weekly "Praxeum" sessions where team members presented their expertise or emerging design trends. This fostered knowledge sharing and encouraged cross-pollination of ideas.

Open Communication Channels: I actively fostered open communication through regular team meetings, one-on-one meetings, and an open "Ask Me Anything" meeting. This ensured that team members felt comfortable voicing concerns and ideas.
These initiatives demonstrably improved team culture:
The company experienced a period of rapid growth, prompting us to expand the design team significantly. Scaling up while preserving the established culture presented a new challenge.
